Las Vegas Raiders hint at using Brock Bowers in a special way by posting a teaser video from OTAs
Candice Ward-USA TODAY Sports

The Las Vegas Raiders drafted one of the best weapons in the 2024 NFL Draft. They drafted tight end Michael Mayer last offseason, so the biggest question was why they drafted another one. Well, as we have come to find out, Brock Bowers will not be used just as a tight end.

Last season, the Raiders' offensive struggles marked a significant shift from the previous year when their offense was strong and their defense was weak. This change in dynamics was a key factor in the team's decision to draft Bowers, adding to the long list of reasons for his selection.

"Yeah, I mean, and also, we're looking to add more playmakers to the offense, and they come in all shapes and sizes, in all different positions," Tom Telesco said after the draft. "But you get a chance to add just another dimension to the offensive, whether it's a tight end, hybrid receiver, or whatever it is, and you need more playmakers on that side of the ball.

"So, I think he's really going to help us there, and I feel like he's a high-level player in college; a true junior, he's 21 years old, so he's very young still, still developing. But he has some natural football skills, combined with some high-level athletic ability and speed, so yeah, I'm really happy to have him."

The position versatility guarantees that they can do more on offense. When you can do more, you are more unpredictable, and when you are more unpredictable, your offense has a chance to score more.

Bowers did more than just play tight end in college. He did a multitude of things, including playing in the slot. He even took a few handoffs and scored on one. He will be a weapon, not exclusively a tight end.

"I got to know so many different things, moving positions and everything like that, and playing defense, too, in high school," Bowers said on his positional flexibility. "And I mean, even at Georgia, they moved me around a decent amount. So, being moved around like that is a lot of fun."

OTAs started this week for the Raiders, and while we don't have much access to the sessions, the Raiders post videos and pictures pretty often. In one of the videos they posted from practice, they teased us with a video of Bowers taking a handoff on what could either be an end-around play, a jet sweep, or even Bowers at the running back position just taking a handoff.

The intrigue surrounding Bowers' role is palpable. While we know he'll feature in 12-personnel sets and can play in the slot, the possibilities are endless. Will he take handoffs? The uncertainty is both thrilling and unnerving, making the potential of this offense truly exciting.
