After a disappointing 2024 campaign, the Las Vegas Raiders are hoping to turn the page under new head coach Pete Carroll. Known for building tough, disciplined teams, Carroll brings a much-needed sense of direction to a franchise that has struggled with inconsistency in recent years.
Despite last season’s struggles, one undeniable bright spot emerged: rookie tight end Brock Bowers. The former Georgia star delivered one of the most impressive rookie seasons by a tight end in NFL history, setting multiple records and establishing himself as a foundational piece of the Raiders’ offense. Now paired with innovative offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, Bowers is expected to be featured even more prominently in 2025.
But Bowers isn’t the only tight end with upside on the roster. The 2023 2nd round draft pick, Michael Mayer, also figures into the equation and could thrive in a dual-tight-end system. Mayer, who showed flashes of his potential last season, now enters a pivotal third year.
“This is a money year for him,” said Raiders insider Hondo Carpenter on a recent episode of the Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast. “He’s a very good tight end. I clearly put Michael Mayer in the top half of NFL tight ends.”
Carpenter praised Mayer’s blocking and pass-catching skills but noted that refining his route running could elevate his game. “He has to stay with his blocks longer, but I love him as a pass catcher,” Carpenter added.
With Bowers and Mayer, the Raiders may have found their offensive identity—and two weapons that can change the course of a game.
