Las Vegas Raiders TE Michael Mayer has a question for the NFL when it comes to their offense in 202
Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports

When the Las Vegas Raiders strategically drafted another tight end just a year after they did before in Michael Mayer, it sparked a lot of discussion among fans. The selection of Brock Bowers, the best available in the draft, was a move that showcased the Raiders' forward-thinking approach.

Mayer, who was taken in the second round last season, could have been disheartened by the new addition. He could have interpreted it as a sign of the new regime's lack of interest in him, especially considering Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels were in charge when the decision was made. However, he chose to view it as an opportunity for growth and improvement.

Usually, players would be upset, but Mayer is instead thinking about how defenses are going to stop the Raiders now. And he just so happened to ask a great question for the rest of the league.

"How are you going to stop them," Mayer said of the other weapons in the Raiders offense. "Brock [Bowers] is a lot of speed. Like I said, I've gotten a little bit faster, and I think there's a ton of things number one in the run game that Brock will be able to help me out with, blocking, but then number two, who's going to guard both of us. If you put it backer, put a small safety here like I'm a big body, Brock is a big body, so it's going to be a lot of fun."

The Raiders are set to implement a 12-personnel strategy in 2024, which will see both Mayer and Bowers on the field at the same time. While Mayer is the primary tight end, Bowers' versatility will be a key asset. His ability to play in the slot, a role not suited for Mayer, will add a new dimension to the team's offense.

The Raiders' offense, heavily predicated on a strong run game and the strategic use of two tight ends, holds immense potential. As Mayer points out, the question arises - how will the opposing team guard everyone? It's important to remember that the team also boasts Davante Adams, the best wide receiver in the league, and a talented supporting cast. The potential for an exceptional offense is there, but it all hinges on the performance of the quarterback.
