Last Chance for Dolphins Cornerbacks to Prove Themselves

Despite the talk of this being a rebuilding or reset year for the Dolphins, the roster itself looks pretty strong.

As long as Tua Tagovailoa stays healthy, which is a big question mark, the Dolphins’ offense should put up a ton of points with the likes of Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, De’Von Achane, and others along to help.

Miami added quality players along the offensive line to fix the running game as well, making the offense have the potential to be one of the best in the league.

On the opposite side of the ball, the Dolphins should have a strong but young defensive front with players like Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips already showing their potential in the pre-season.

Arguably, this side of the ball also has Miami’s best position room at off-ball linebacker with all-pro level player, Jordyn Brooks, and cast-mates Tyrel Dodson, K.J. Britt, and Willie Gay Jr.

The safety room looks a lot better since late June with the addition of all-pro, Minkah Fitzpatrick, and high-level player, Ifeatu Melifonwu, as long as he stays healthy.

Still, there is one position room where the questions remain.

The cornerback room.

Heading into the last week of the preseason and a week and a half before the roster cutdown, the Dolphins have a huge position battle to sort through.

It does look like Storm Duck has separated himself on the outside while Ethan Bonner, Jack Jones, and Kendall Sheffield fight for the other spot.

Each of the trio at one point this camp has looked like the best option, but with one week to go, they need to ramp it up.

Jones has the most experience, but he is also prone to inconsistency throughout his career.

Sheffield and Bonner, on the other hand, have shown flashes but have not done anything consistently enough in the regular season.

Meanwhile, in the nickel, it looks like steady veteran Mike Hilton will handle the duties after Kader Kohou‘s season-ending injury.

Luckily for Miami, whoever wins the starting cornerback job will have Fitzpatrick and Melifonwu behind them to erase any mistakes.

Still, it would be nice for the team to have a quality option on the outside, which would allow for a talented front-seven to get after the opposing quarterback.

If Miami can solve this issue, it could challenge for a spot at the top of the AFC.

They have one week left to figure it out.
