The Kansas City Chiefs have released an updated version of their depth chart ahead of the Week 7 game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Keep in mind that these depth charts are released by the team, but they're considered "unofficial." Why? Because they're assembled by the team's PR staff and not the coaching staff. The accuracy of depth charts during the regular season tends to be centered around in-game, practice observations, and roster transactions.
Two changes on the offensive side of the ball are reflected in the latest version of the depth chart compared to the Week 5 version. What might be more interesting is the details left out. . .
Rashee Rice still appeared on the team's Week 5 depth chart despite suffering his injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Once he was placed on injured reserve, the team was finally able to remove him from the depth chart. As a result, Worthy moves up a spot and stakes his claim to the No. 1 WR position in Kansas City, opposite Justin Watson. This should come as no surprise as the former first-round draft pick has already impressed in a short time.
Fortson is now No. 4 on the depth chart behind rookie TE Jared Wiley. Even with just one game under his belt, it feels like this is inaccurate. Wiley outsnapped Fortson on offense in the Week 5 game against the New Orleans Saints, but Fortson played special teams and caught a pass. I wouldn't be shocked to see his role expand as they look to improve their 30th-ranked red zone offense.
The most notable thing on the depth chart is the lack of RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was activated to the 53-man roster on Tuesday. Someone didn't get the memo that Edwards-Helaire would be activated in time to include him on this week's iteration of the depth chart. What will be interesting to see is where he falls in the pecking order for Kansas City. If you look at the Chiefs' first preseason depth chart, Edwards-Helaire fell squarely behind Isiah Pacheco as the team's No. 2 running back. Would he supplant Kareem Hunt in his return? I don't particularly think so after what Andy Reid said on Monday. However, it's not outside of the realm of possibilities. He could even return as the No. 2 back behind Hunt, pushing Perine and Steele further down the depth chart.
