The Kansas City Chiefs have released an updated version of their depth chart ahead of their Week 9 game on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It's important to note that while these depth charts are released by the team, they're considered "unofficial." Why is that the case? These depth charts are assembled by the team's PR staff as opposed to the coaching staff. The accuracy of depth charts during the regular season tends to be centered around in-game, practice observations, and recent roster transactions.
The team's recent trades for WR DeAndre Hopkins and DE/LB Joshua Uche are reflected latest version of the depth chart. What might be more interesting is where they're currently listed on the team's depth chart. . .
Despite Hopkins playing over 30% of the team's offensive snaps in Week 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders, the Chiefs still list him as a third-string wide receiver. It's not uncommon for the team to list new trade acquisitions further down the depth chart as they get acclimated, but it's pretty clear what Hopkins' role will be in Kansas City moving forward. He should be among the top three players on the depth chart, especially when Andy Reid says he'll get more opportunities as early as Week 9's game against the Buccaneers.
It's a little more reasonable for Uche to be listed as a third-string edge rusher because he hasn't even practiced with the Chiefs yet. The team just acquired him in a trade with the New England Patriots on Monday. Even as his snap counts go up with Kansas City, I wouldn't be surprised to see him continually listed in this spot. They've got a deep rotation of pass rushers and will likely mix-and-match that group.
Fortson and Watson were both still on last week's depth chart, but they're now both removed from the depth chart after heading to injured reserve. Keith Taylor replaces Watson on the 53-man roster and is now listed behind Joshua Williams, who is now listed as a starter opposite Trent McDuffie.
