Free agency has been really good to the Minnesota Vikings over the first few days. They have made a lot moves to fortify the roster for a potential Super Bowl run in 2025 and beyond.
The trenches have gotten a lot of love for the Vikings and who can blame them? It's been both a weak spot over the last decade and an area of focus for general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah this offseason. While the signings of right guard Will Fries and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen are both really exciting, the Vikings have done more than just that.
A few days before the legal tampering period began, the Vikings extended one of their own in safety Theo Jackson. The deal was initially reported as a two-year extension worth approximately $12.6 million at its initial reporting.
Like most contracts that are reported by the likes of Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, they usually report the numbers at their max value rather than give the nuance details of what the contract actually is. That gives the player a better public perception.
Jackson's deal is one of those contracts. Here is how it breaks down.
The contract is essentially a three-year, $9.365 million deal, which is about $25% less than initially reported. It also is similar to the contract they gave offensive lineman Blake Brandel last March and he started at left guard all season.
This has become a calling card of Adofo-Mensah: buying low on a player who is a fringe starter at the time with the hopes they develop into something more. They did so with both Brandel and Josh Metellus and it's worked out well.
The Vikings do like having multiple safeties on the field at all times, with three safety looks being a key position grouping in Brian Flores' defense.
