Latest NFL blockbuster trade directly gives the Cowboys a chance to pull off a savvy trade that makes too much sense

The door is open for the Dallas Cowboys to get busy in the trade market following the Pittsburgh Steelers' and Miami Dolphins' blockbuster trade involving cornerback Jalen Ramsey , safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and tight end Jonnu Smith

The two AFC teams shook the NFL world on Monday by executing the NBA-esque trade involving three well-known players and more trades around the league are expected in the aftermath.

That's primarily because by giving up Jonnu Smith, the Dolphins are in the need of tight end help. And if you ask me, the Cowboys are in a great spot to provide for them.

The Cowboys should trade Luke Schoonmaker to the Dolphins

Schoonmaker—former second-round draft pick for the Cowboys—could be someone that intrigues the Dolphins based on upside alone. His athletic profile is exactly why Dallas bet on him in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, things haven't panned out for the parties involved.

In two seasons, Schoonmaker has caught 35 passes for 306 yards, most of which came in 2024. His catching and blocking have been inconsistent. Though he's still young and injuries have played a factor, Schoonmaker is more of a project than he is a high-floor player.

Going into next season, Schoonmaker isn't a guarantee to be TE2. A big part of that is Brevyn Spann-Ford's rise as a former UDFA. The second-year tight end has turned heads in practice and fits very well what the Cowboys want to do on offense under head coach Brian Schottenheimer and offensive coordinator Klayton Adams. I listed Spann-Ford as one of the biggest winners from minicamp as he continues to work with the ones and twos.

The Cowboys are expected to run multiple tight end sets this season, and the run game is a big reason why. Spann-Ford has proven he can hold his own blocking for the run, his specialty in college. He's also confirmed drops aren't an issue and he can be trusted to catch the football.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have given up multiple draft picks in exchange for players including Joe Milton, Kenneth Murray, Kaiir Elam, and most notably, George Pickens. Adding even a late-rounder for Schoonmaker could be seen as a win for Dallas' front office.

Would the Dolphins even be interested?

I'm certain Dolphins fans wouldn't be in love with the notion of trading for a player who isn't meeting expectations but here's what we know: According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Miami is having conversations with multiple teams about acquiring a tight end.

At this time of the year, not many NFL teams are willing to part ways with their guys. Dallas is a rare case as they have three viable tight ends plus a couple of promising rookies (UDFA) to work with.

This could be a win-win for everyone involved.
