Mike Evans was given the tough task of ending the NBA GOAT debate between Michael Jordan and LeBron James by his former Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammate, Louis Murphy Jr. Even seasoned basketball pundits prefer to stay away from touching this sensitive subject, but Evans barely hesitated for his answer.
Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, but in two spells. He temporarily retired after a three-peat due to the untimely death of his father. After staying away from the game for a little over a year, he returned to the Bulls and bagged three more rings.
If Jordan hadn’t paused his career to mourn his father’s passing, then he might have won a couple more.
Mike Evans hinted that the gap in Jordan’s playing career ended the GOAT debate.
We try to play as long as we can, no matter what they say. No matter how dominant you were, you wanna play. I wish I can play for 23 years. I wish.
Mike Evans said
Evans kept LeBron James ahead of Jordan for the very reason, longevity. James debuted for the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2003, but it took nearly nine years and a change of scenery to win his first NBA title.
The Akron native won two rings with the Miami Heat before returning to Cleveland for a third NBA title. He became a champion for the fourth time in 2020, but with the Los Angeles Lakers.
James became only the fourth player to win NBA titles with three different teams (John Salley, Robert Horry, and Danny Green are the other three, as per Pro Football Sports Network).
The incredible part of James’ career is that he’s still going strong at the age of 40. Evans chose James over Jordan.
Most of the time, he’s the best player on the court. Like if he’s feeling good, he’s the best player. You got Jordan above him. I understand, but I am gonna go with Bron. He’s bigger and versatile.

Deciding the Jordan-James debate wasn’t the only question Evans faced from Murphy. He was also asked to name the best wide receiver room in the NFL.
Evans gave it a good thought before coming up with the Cincinnati Bengals. The AFC North franchise has two of the highest-paid receivers in football: Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase last year had the triple crown, leading the league in receptions (127), receiving yards (1708), and receiving touchdowns (17).
The veteran’s next choice was the Los Angeles Rams. Evans specifically mentioned the Rams’ third-year receiver, Puka Nacua, who has over 2470 yards from 184 receptions and 9 touchdowns in his first couple of years in the NFL. They also signed All-Pro wideout Davante Adams.
Next came the Miami Dolphins with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. “You gotta go, Cheetah,” Evans said.
The receiver room of AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith of the Philadelphia Eagles became his final pick instead of the Dallas Cowboys, who boast CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens.
I’ma go Eagles. They won a Super Bowl. AJ and Devonta.
Evans added
But which of the receiving rooms is the best among them? The answer is none of the above because Evans picked his team as the number one.
I ain’t really worried about all these other receiver rooms… We [Bucs] number one.

Aside from the 6x Pro Bowler, the Bucs boast the likes of All-Pro Chris Godwin, 2025’s 19th overall pick Emeka Egbuka, and former Oregon star Tez Johnson. The Bucs also have a dynamic running back core: Rachaad White and Bucky Irving.
The man under center for the Bucs is Baker Mayfield. Last year, Mayfield threw 4500 yards and 41 touchdowns.
The Bucs went 2-1 in the preseason and are preparing to play rivals, the Atlanta Falcons, on opening day of the new campaign.
