One of the recurring themes of Justin Herbert’s career is the Los Angeles Chargers’ inability to give him adequate help. When he was drafted back in 2020, the team had two stars at the wide receiver position, Mike Williams and Keenan Allen.
But both players are now on the wrong side of 30, causing the Chargers to let both of them walk last year in free agency. They would ultimately bring Williams back this summer, but in a stunning twist of events, the former No. 7 overall pick retired following another brutal injury.
This decision decimated an already thin Los Angeles receiving corps, leaving the team in a precarious position.
After the Chargers scoffed at multiple opportunities to acquire high-level pass catchers this summer, it became abundantly clear that they are banking on progression from within.
Second-year star Ladd McConkey became Herbert’s most reliable passing option last season, but there hasn’t been many positive reports about the team’s other receivers during training camp.
Earlier this summer, the idea of a reunion with Allen was floated, but nothing ever arose from the speculation. In the light of Williams’ retirement and the rapidly approaching 2026 season, both parties appear to be revisiting the possibility of a return.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapaport announced Friday that Allen met with the team and a deal seems increasingly likely. The six-time Pro Bowler struggled mightily last season with the Chicago Bears, but some of that could be attributed to rookie quarterback Caleb Williams having a tough time transitioning to the pros.
He and Herbert developed great chemistry in their four years together, so a reunion could see Allen return to his elite form.
