There were significant changes during the offseason to the Philadelphia Eagles' coaching staff following the departure of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, but that doesn't alter how the offense operates.
In Moore's only season as offensive coordinator, the Eagles' offense finished eighth in the NFL in total offense with 367.2 yards per game. The offense primarily relied on Jalen Hurts' quarterback sneaks and Saquon Barkley's legs, as the unit finished second last year in rushing, averaging 179.3 yards per game.
Moore departed from Philadelphia after the Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs to stay in the same town where the Eagles had won, to become the New Orleans Saints' head coach. That led to Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni promoting Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator.
While some might believe Patullo will be running the offense, a former Eagles legend tells a different story, letting it slip on who told him.
Former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy appeared on FS1's show, Facility, as the panel discussed who was closer to returning to the Super Bowl between the Chiefs and Eagles. McCoy shared some insights into the Eagles' offense and inadvertently revealed who had informed him that he was running the offense.
“A.J. (Brown) told me, well.. players tell me, the offense is the offense. They don’t care who the coordinator is, you come over here and fit the Jalen Hurts offense.”
Hurts is accustomed to adjusting to different offensive coordinators for most of his young NFL career. He has had four different play callers before Patullo.
Brown's comments to McCoy are interesting since Hurts and Brown's relationship was not on the best of terms during the regular season. It was the lack of targets that frustrated Brown, but he and Hurts worked through it and still won a Super Bowl in the process.
The definition of a "Hurts offense" can be open to interpretation since he has run different styles of offense. He has handled pass-heavy units and run-first offenses. He works better in an offense with more running, as RPO plays can be utilized with his legs. However, when they do pass, let Hurts rip it down the field to Brown or DeVonta Smith.
Hurts has never been one to call attention to himself and take control of an offense, so evidence will be needed to show that. He will work within Patullo's system, which shouldn't change too much from last year's offense. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
