Lions Announce Concerning News Amid Amon-Ra St. Brown Injury

The critical NFC game between the Detroit Lions (7-5) and the Dallas Cowboys (6-5-1) on "Thursday Night Football" is quickly approaching, and the latest injury report contains more concerning news for quarterback Jared Goff and the Detroit offense.

Star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown did not practice on Monday or Tuesday due to a sprained ankle, leaving his status in doubt for the game at Ford Field on Thursday. St. Brown suffered the injury in the first half of Detroit’s 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving and did not finish the game. He is Goff's favorite target, hauling in a team-high 75 receptions for 884 yards and nine touchdowns through the first 12 games.

If that was not enough reason for concern, two-time All-Pro offensive lineman Penei Sewell unexpectedly popped up on the injury report 48 hours before the Cowboys game. The Lions announced that he did not practice on Tuesday due to a shoulder injury. Sewell was a full participant in Monday's practice.

While he plays a less glamorous position, there is a case to be made that Sewell is the best player on the Lions offense — every bit as important as Goff, St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

With an overall grade of 95.7, Pro Football Focus ranks Sewell as the best offensive tackle in the NFL. As of Week 9, he was the top-ranked player at any position by the same metric.

The Lions have already lost several key players on both sides of the ball this season, such as tight end Sam LaPorta and cornerback Terrion Arnold.

It is worth noting that offensive linemen Taylor Decker (did not practice), Kayode Awosika and Graham Glasgow (limited) were all on Tuesday's injury report as well.

"The margin for error is small," Detroit head coach Dan Campbell said amid his team's injury woes, "but it's doable — and we can do it."

Given the importance of Sewell and St. Brown to the Lions offense, their statuses will be worth monitoring on Wednesday. If they do not return to practice, Goff may be facing the reality of taking on the Cowboys without two of his most reliable teammates on offense.

The Cowboys-Lions game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday and will be streamed live on Amazon Prime Video. Entering Week 14, Detroit and Dallas are the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds in the NFC — the first two teams outside the playoff picture.
