Jahmyr Gibbs and the Detroit Lions are looking to bounce back in Thursday’s primetime matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The Lions entered this game following a disappointing 31-24 divisional rivalry loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 13, which saw their record drop to 7-5.
The result of Thursday’s contest will have major implications for both the Lions and the Cowboys’ playoff chances. Gibbs knew full well what was at stake, and he wasted no time making his impact on the high-stakes game. The two-time Pro Bowl running back scored the first touchdown of the contest in the first quarter, en route to rewriting the franchise history books.
Gibbs, who is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl appearances in his first two seasons in the NFL, is in the midst of another big year for the Lions. He entered Thursday’s contest with 175 carries for 1,019 yards and 10 rushing touchdowns. Gibbs has also already recorded 51 catches for 397 yards and three receiving TDs.
Gibbs came into Thursday’s game with 36 rushing touchdowns. He logged his 37th in the first quarter against Dallas, and it saw him climb the ranks in the franchise history books. The Lions took to social media to announce Gibbs’ latest career milestone.
“. @Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has passed Dutch Clark (36) for the 3rd-most rushing TDs in franchise history,” the team posted on X.

As the post indicates, Gibbs has surpassed Hall of Famer Dutch Clark for the No. 3 spot for the most rushing touchdowns in Lions history. The fact that Gibbs achieved this feat in just 45 games (Clark did it in 75) is a testament to how much of an impact the 23-year-old RB has had in just his third season in the NFL.
Gibbs is now chasing two icons on the elite list. Three-time Pro Bowl RB Billy Sims is No. 2 with 42 rushing TDs, while Hall of Famer Barry Sanders is first with 99.
The Lions will need Gibbs to keep his foot on the gas in this one. As of writing, Detroit holds a 10-6 lead with eight minutes remaining in the second quarter. Gibbs has already logged three carries for 18 yards and one historic TD.
