Lions’ Avonte Maddox To Undergo Season-Ending Foot Surgery

The veteran defensive back will require season-ending surgery, head coach Dan Campbell said on Monday (h/t ESPN’s Eric Woodyard). That will deal a blow to a Lions secondary which has endured plenty of struggles through two games this season. Maddox is a pending 2027 free agent, so his market value will obviously be severely impacted by this injury.

The former Eagle played on a one-year Lions pact in 2024. Maddox remained in the fold on a nearly identical deal this offseason. He logged a 68% snap share prior to being injured while starting each of Detroit’s first two contests. Losing the ninth-year veteran will leave Detroit short on experience in the secondary, a unit which could see multiple additions in the near future.

The Lions staged a workout for several defensive backs. Jalen Mills and Jordan Fuller were among the free agents who received a look, as was fellow veteran Mike Edwards. Longtime Colts slot corner Kenny Moore is also on the market at this time, and Detroit is believed to be among his suitors. Especially with Maddox known to be out of the fold, it would come as no surprise if at least one signing were to take place in time for Week 3.

The safety position could receive reinforcements as early as Week 5, the first point at which Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph will be eligible for activation from the reserve/PUP list. The possibility of at least one returning to action earlier than Detroit initially hoped was recently raised, and that would certainly be welcomed news as the team looks to rebound from a poor defensive start to the campaign. In any case, though, changes in the secondary will remain something to watch for over the coming days.

Maddox, 30, has never served as a full-time starter in his career. He has nevertheless handled large defensive workloads at stretches over the course of his NFL tenure, and that could have continued to be the case in 2026. Instead, his attention will turn to a lengthy recovery process.
