Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell had to witness an embarrassing loss against the Green Bay Packers transpire in Week 1. Aaron Glenn had to watch a gloating Aaron Rodgers at MetLife Stadium after the Pittsburgh Steelers picked up a close victory against the New York Jets.
And, Ben Johnson had to watch Kevin O'Connell and second year quarterback J.J. McCarthy stage a comeback at Soldier Field, spoiling his debut alongside his second year signal caller in Caleb Williams.
It wasn't so easy snagging a Week 1 win if you were a formerly (or currently) huge piece to the coaching tree related to the resurgent Detroit Lions.
After months of speculation as to the impact of losing Glenn and Johnson on Campbell's team, it's clear that all three are going through the growing pains associated with leaving one another. And, that's a completely normal result to expect.
Campbell and Johnson will be facing off with one another next Sunday afternoon in another key NFC North battle for the Lions. Both are entering the contest 0-1 to begin the season, but it would be foolish to say that either made any mistakes by either not staying with Detroit (Johnson) or not fighting to keep Johnson there (Campbell).
As for Glenn, the Jets looked surprisingly decent in their regular season debut against a top defense. Much of that credit should go to another former Lions coach in Tanner Engstrand, who has taken over at offensive coordinator for New York this year. "I just watched a competent Jets offense" is not a sentence you could have said for the last several years. Engstrand is making that a reality.
Regardless of that success, though, a loss was still suffered by New York in a tough AFC East division. Clearly, all three coaches are going through the pains of existing without one another, and it's a chemistry issue for all three teams that can be fixed.
One thing that can be taken away from these losses is that the regression isn't going to only fall on the Lions' shoulders: the Jets and Bears are also set to experience some steps back with a new head coach at the helm.
