The Detroit Lions officially acquired quarterback Jared Goff from the Los Angeles Rams last month in a trade that involved sending signal-caller Matthew Stafford to Los Angeles. Detroit enters the 2021 NFL Draft that opens Thursday night holding the seventh pick and, per multiple mock drafts, won't be using that asset on a quarterback.
With reports suggesting four or even five QBs could be drafted in the first 10 selections, Detroit general manager Brad Holmes is willing to listen to offers for pick No. 7.
"Yes, there have been (trade) discussions with other teams," Holmes told reporters on Friday, per Kyle Meinke of mlive.com. "I will keep those in house, but yeah, there have been discussions."
While a plethora of talented non-quarterbacks will still be on the board after six players are taken, Holmes realizes his pick could be worth more than one individual depending on what a fellow general manager could be willing to give Detroit to move up.
"Whenever you’re picking in the top 10, obviously it’s an extremely valuable pick, but it’s very exciting to be looking at this crop of players that would be worthy of selecting (there)," he added. "Where I just came from, we weren’t really used to picking in the first round that much. So being up in the top 10 (is cool). But at seven, we do have a cluster of players that we’re comfortable with picking. But at the same time, we would be very prepared and also willing to move in either direction. So we’re still open in those regards, but there is a cluster of players that we would be comfortable with."
In their latest mock drafts, Chris Trapasso and Josh Edwards of CBS Sports have the Lions trading the pick to a quarterback-hungry team. Ryan Wilson, meanwhile, predicts Detroit will use the seventh selection to land Ohio State Buckeyes QB Justin Fields.
