Lions fans rejoice as Packers unnecessarily anger their best wide receiver

This offseason has been pretty eye opening in terms of fans seeing which teams may not be amazing at negotiating with their star players. We're seeing in real time the deterioration of the relationship between Trey Hendrickson with the Cincinnati Bengals, and we nearly saw it happen with the Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett.

The Detroit Lions have, thankfully, not had to deal with such problems ahead of the 2025 season. It probably helps that many of their core players are locked in for 2025 and beyond, so there's been no need to deal with strenuous extension talks or anything distracting related to their stars.

The Green Bay Packers, who the Lions face off with twice this year in typical NFC North fashion, are dealing with a similar issue ahead of the season with one of their best playmakers - Jayden Reed. The wide receiver who finished up his 2024 campaign for the Packers with 857 receiving yards, six touchdowns, and 15.6 yards per catch is suddenly dealing with a bit of a conundrum as to his role with the team after they drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams.

With that depth, and the looming return of Christian Watson at some point next season, it feels like Reed might find himself losing a ton of touches during a season where he should be the WR1 for Green Bay.

Packers' dysfunction should be making Lions fans rejoice

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Reed's agent met with the teams' front office after the draft to discuss his future with the team. Per Schefter, the Packers ensured Reed's team that his role hasn't changed, and that he'd still be an integral piece to their offense's puzzle in 2025 and beyond.

Reed isn't the only receiver who seemed a little confused about the team going for Golden so early in the draft. Watson, who will be out for most of the 2025 season because of another devastating knee injury, seemed to have some upset family members after the Golden pick.

It's a crowded room, to be sure. You can never have too many playmakers, especially around a quarterback like Jordan Love who has struggled with cutting down on interceptions in his early career. Adding Golden, and Williams, to the room just helps to add options for Love down field in addition to Reed.

But, if we're going by veteran status and who deserves to get touches this season, Reed is the Packers' guy. Upsetting him with their draft to the point of needing a meeting to ensure his role isn't going to be shrunken is not a great start to the year. Thankfully, with the Lions having one of the best WR duos in the league, they just don't seem to be primed to have that issue.
