Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta quickly introduced himself to the upper echelon of his position as a rookie.
In his first NFL season, LaPorta broke the league's record for receptions by a rookie tight end with 86. He turned those catches into 889 yards and 10 touchdowns.
His strong start to his career earned him third place in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting and a spot on the All-Pro Second Team.
Then his usage took a pretty big step back in 2024.
He had 37 less targets this past season in one less game and was only able to make 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns.
While recently speaking to the media, LaPorta discussed his year two results and said that he isn't concerned about his lack of touches.
I kept hearing comments maybe this offseason like, why didn't you get the ball as much? Like, dude, we scored the most points out of any team in the NFL in the last five years. Like, everybody deserves the ball.
The competition for touches in Detroit hasn't decreased at all, but there is one big offseason change that could be good news for LaPorta.
John Morton is the team's new offensive coordinator.
Morton doesn't have a long history in this role, but his one previous season as an OC in the NFL just might point to LaPorta getting more touches in 2025.
When Morton was in charge of the Jets' offense in 2017, they threw the ball to Austin Seferian-Jenkins 74 times in 13 games.
That would be a 17-game pace of 96.8 targets, which is just under 14 more than LaPorta had last season.
He is also a much better player than Seferian-Jenkins, so Morton should be more inclined to get him the ball.
The Lions are also facing one of the toughest schedules in the NFL in 2025, so they may have more close games, which would lead to more targets across the board for their pass catchers.
There are definitely reasons to believe LaPorta will be able to recreate his rookie numbers in the future.
