Lions HC Dan Campbell wants 'day one starter' with No. 2 pick of 2022 NFL Draft

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes raised eyebrows when he suggested during the league's annual meetings last month that he could use a selection in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft, perhaps even pick No. 2, on a quarterback who would then sit and learn behind current starter and veteran Jared Goff.

It appears Lions head coach Dan Campbell is not a fan of spending a second-overall draft pick on a project for the future.

"You want a guy who can come in and he’s a day one starter," Campbell said of using the second pick on a player, per Tim Twentyman of the Lions' website. "That's really what you're trying to acquire. A guy that you feel like can come in, he's going to be able to have solid production for you. You'd like to believe by the time you hit your first game that this player is starting for you and he's going to be able to produce."

While at least one earlier mock draft linked the Lions with former Liberty Flames quarterback Malik Willis, five different CBS Sports analysts currently predict Detroit will use pick No. 2 on a hoped-to-be defensive star. However, the Lions also hold the rights to the final choice (No. 32 overall) of the draft's first round and theoretically could use it to acquire a signal-caller or trade it away to obtain additional draft capital.

Back in January, Holmes seemed to commit to Goff as his starter for at least 2022, but the 27-year-old is on a contract that, financially speaking, would be easy to dump next winter.
