Lions HC makes bold claim about improvement of Jared Goff

Dan Campbell's comments on the growth of Jared Goff should make the quarterback feel secure about his future in Detroit.

"He's a better quarterback than he was there [in Los Angeles], in my opinion — because he can do more things. He's mentally on it," the Lions head coach said in a Tuesday news conference.

The resounding vote of confidence is a bold claim. When Goff was the Rams QB from 2016-20, he led them to Super Bowl LIII, made two Pro Bowls and posted a 42-27 starting record. Goff has a 12-18-1 record in two seasons with the Lions.

However, Goff's resilience may have impressed Campbell, and that's why he believes he's a better player now.

After the Rams dealt the former No. 1 overall pick in 2021, it appeared his career was on the downslide, especially after the Lions started 1-6 last season.

Nevertheless, Goff persevered, the Lions went 8-2 in their last 10 games, capturing their first winning season since 2017. Goff finished with the league's fifth-best QBR (61.1), tied for fifth in TDs (29) and made his third Pro Bowl.

Two years remain on Goff's contract. He could earn an extension if he has another productive year and leads Detroit to its first division title since 1993. Lions general manager Brad Holmes recently told WXYT-FM in Detroit, "We've had a dialogue with his agent, and we're in a good place."

Campbell's comments are a good sign for Goff because it proves the HC believes he's on an upward trajectory and is key to the organization's success.

Perhaps Goff has a bright future in Detroit and will keep proving he's a solid QB.
