Lions Host S Mike Edwards

Safety Mike Edwards also met with Detroit, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports. He represents another veteran who could receive consideration for an in-season deal. The safety position has been severely shorthanded in the Lions’ case to begin 2026 with both Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph on the mend.

It was recently reported Detroit could get at least one of those two back in the fold earlier than anticipated. Nevertheless, Branch and Joseph will remain on the reserve/PUP list until at least Week 5. It would come as no surprise if a veteran addition were to be made allowing for at least an experienced depth piece in the secondary. Edwards, 30, would fit the bill.

The two-time Super Bowl champion has played a combined 101 regular and postseason games in the NFL. Edwards has seen time with three teams to date in his career, including a pair of stints in Kansas City. Last year, he made a played of six games. In all, Edwards has made 37 starts across his regular-season and playoff appearances. He could look to add to that figure depending on how the Lions proceed in terms of potential signings in the immediate future.

With nearly $40MM in cap space, finances will certainly not be an issue if one or more additions are sought out to aid the Lions’ defense in general and defensive backs group in particular. The slot corner position could see a new arrival if Detroit’s Kenny Moore interest results in a signing. The same could also be true at the safety spot with Edwards among the veterans on the team’s radar early in the campaign.
