Lions just received an unexpected break after latest Joe Burrow injury update

This is not meant to tempt the football gods, but it sure sounds like the Detroit Lions are staring down a much...easier game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 5.

The AFC North team that has experienced some ridiculous highs and depressing lows since drafting Joe Burrow is now dealing with another one of their canyons. Burrow suffered turf toe against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2, in addition to some torn ligaments in his foot. As a result, he's expected to be out a whopping three months at minimum, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Bengals' backup is currently Jake Browning, who threw for two touchdowns and three picks in relief of the Bengals' star signal caller. They won the contest, but it's clearly an unsustainable formula to have Browning as your guy when you're looking to compete in a division featuring Lamar Jackson.

This is, in a way, good news for the Lions as Cincinnati lands right after another "easy on paper" game against the Cleveland Browns in Week 4. If they can at least win two of their next three contests ahead of going into Kansas City for a Chiefs game in Week 6, that's great for their momentum and chances in the NFC North against a tough-nosed Green Bay Packers team.

Burrow out a minimum of three months

Cincinnati not having an answer outside of Burrow at backup quarterback that's decent enough to carry the team in his absence is a huge reason why backup is so important - and why the Lions took their competition at QB2 so seriously. Any given Sunday, your star can go down, an unknown player can rise to the top, or an underdog squad can get a statement win against the odds on favorite.

Burrow had been playing well through two weeks, throwing for 189 passing yards and two touchdowns on the year behind some, once again, shoddy O-line play from the Bengals.

If Goff went down with anything similar to Burrow's injury, the team would need to rely on Kyle Allen to step up, especially since Detroit is such a great team that could still compete without Goff in most games. It's why the team cut Hendon Hooker at the end of training camp: they couldn't keep waiting on a developmental quarterback to, well, develop.

The Bengals may need to consider shopping around for a new backup if Browning can't cut it in their next few games against the Minnesota Vikings, Denver Broncos, and Lions - three teams with excellent defenses and featuring stars in their pass rush.
