Jahmyr Gibbs is having another big year for the Detroit Lions. The two-time Pro Bowl running back has already registered 70 carries in his first five games of the season for 325 yards and four touchdowns. Gibbs is now looking to keep his foot on the gas on Sunday as the Lions take on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in a Week 6 showdown at Arrowhead Stadium.
After losing their season-opener to the Green Bay Packers in Week 1, the Lions have stacked up four consecutive wins and are now hoping to make it five in a row against a Chiefs side that has struggled for consistency early on in the season.
Gibbs wasted no time making his mark in Sunday’s primetime matchup. The Lions were more than comfortable turning to the former Alabama Crimson Tide star to open the game. So much so that Gibbs was able to record no less than nine carries in the team’s opening drive, helping to push the offense inside the 10-yard line.
Detroit, however, had to settle for a 28-yard field goal after being called for a penalty on a trick play. They opened the scoring, 3-0, at the 5:21 mark of the opening quarter, with Gibbs playing a pivotal role in the scoring drive.
Gibbs kept it going throughout the first half. By the end of the first two quarters of play, the Lions RB had already recorded 13 carries for 59 yards. This allowed him to make his mark in the franchise's history books once again.
The Lions took to social media to announce Gibbs’ latest feat during the halftime break.
“. @Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs has produced 50+ scrimmage yards for the 23rd-straight game. This ties for the third-longest streak in franchise history,” Detroit Lions PR posted on X.

With his 59 scrimmage yards in the opening half, Gibbs already matched the third all-time record for most consecutive games with at least 50 yards. This streak extends all the way back to Week 1 of his sophomore campaign last year.
This also isn’t the first time Gibbs has made history this season. In their Week 3 win over Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, Gibbs combined with RB David Montgomery to make NFL history. Gibbs and Montgomery both scored rushing TDs in the same game for a league-record 11th time.
Detroit will need Gibbs to play even better to close out this game, though. As of writing, the Lions are down 20-10 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
