Lions miss out on another pass rusher as Marcus Davenport's status is up in the air

Definitely not comments that will quell anxiety in a game where getting to the quarterback will be one of the biggest keys to victory. Especially considering the Ravens have one of the most difficult QBs to bring down in two-time MVP Lamar Jackson. The Ravens themselves will likely be without star pass rusher, and former Lion, Kyle Van Noy.

Davenport's injuries are the latest in a long line of injuries that have plagued the talented edge rusher's career. Davenport has only started double-digit games in a season once, in his second season when he was with the New Orleans Saints. Davenport played a career-high 15 games in 2022, also with the Saints.

Davenport has played four games thus far with the Lions since signing with the team before the 2024 season. Davenport has totaled 1.5 sacks, including one on Sunday. If Davenport can't go, expect Al-Quadin Muhammad to see good playing time after a breakout performance in relief of Davenport, where he recorded a sack of his own.

Clelin Ferrell's signing drys up the available edge rushing well

With any news regarding Lions edge rushers, eyes shift to the free agency market. The Dallas Cowboys were quick to pick up Jadeveon Clowney after their overtime victory over the New York GIants, where they surely missed recently traded Micah Parsons.

Another edge rusher is now off the market after the Los Angeles Chargers signed Clelin Ferrell. The Chargers were in need of depth on the defensive line after outside linebacker Khalil Mack was placed on the IR after dislocating his elbow during the Chargers' Monday night win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ferrell is set to once again replace Mack after being drafted by the Raiders fourth overall in 2019, after Mack was traded to the Bears at the start of the previous season. Ferrell has been a disappointment in the NFL, totaling 17.0 sacks across 89 games. Ferrell was most recently with the Washington Commanders in 2024, where he started ten games. Against the Lions in the playoffs, Ferrell had one pass deflection and four combined tackles in 25 snaps.

Ferrell would not have been the most exciting candidate to add, as all the really exciting free agents are now signed. However, depth will become vital as the season wears on, as the Lions know all too well from last season. Not signing Ferrell is another sign that Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes remain confident in the personnel they have in the position, and hopefully that faith isn't misplaced.
