Lions missing out on top defensive trade target?

The Detroit Lions could be about to miss out on one of their top defensive trade targets.

Detroit had emerged as a potential suitor for Joey Porter Jr. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that the Lions were among the teams to inquire about the Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback.

Pittsburgh is willing to listen to offers, according to Schefter, but the Steelers want a strong compensation package. That left the door open for Detroit to make a move before the trade deadline.

However, the situation now appears to be shifting quickly. Woodward Sports Network reported Wednesday that sources have indicated that Porter could be traded to the New York Giants. The deal has not been made official yet, but it could signal that Detroit has lost ground in its pursuit of the cornerback.

That would leave the Lions looking elsewhere if they still want to strengthen their secondary. Porter has yet to play this season, but Detroit’s reported interest showed that the team was exploring defensive help.

Detroit Lions could still pursue secondary help

Dan Campbell’s defense allowed 321 passing yards in Sunday’s 31-24 win over the New York Jets. The Lions still made enough late plays to secure the victory, but the performance underlined a need for greater consistency.

The Lions have already shown they are willing to explore the trade market for defensive help. If the Giants ultimately land Porter, Detroit may have to look elsewhere to address its secondary before the deadline.
