Lions Place TE Anthony Firkser On IR

Today’s news means Firkser will be sidelined through the coming season. He joined the Commanders in June but found himself being released the following month. That allowed for a return to the Motor City. Firkser played for the Lions in 2023 and again last season.

During both of those stints, the 31-year-old was a regular presence on special teams. Firkser also logged a 40% snap share on offense during his seven appearances in 2025. Competition for a depth role at the tight end spot was set to last through the remainder of training camp and into the preseason in this case, but that will no longer be possible for Firkser. Detroit has turned to a familiar face to replace him.

The team also announced on Tuesday that Zach Horton has been brought back. Horton was waived last week, but to no surprise he cleared without any claims being put in. That left the 23-year-old free to sign anywhere, and Firkser’s injury opened the door to a quick return. After entering the league as an undrafted free agent, Horton made two appearances for the Lions last season. He will resume attempting to land at least a practice squad spot after roster cuts.

Sam LaPorta is in position to once again lead the way in terms of pass-catching tight end options for the Lions this season. Brock Wright is set to remain a depth presence, while the likes of Tyler Conklin and Nick Muse are also in the fold. Detroit has over $14MM in cap space, so affording another low-cost addition if one is to be sought out will not be a problem.
