The Detroit Lions have set up plenty of interesting position battles across their roster this offseason.
Drafting Tyleik Williams in round one made things very crowded at defensive tackle. The interior of their offensive line doesn't seem to have anybody locked into a starting job at any position.
They've also added a bunch of cornerbacks and started a competition for the backup QB job.
Those last two position battles could lead to the team moving on from veterans they added this offseason.
In an article projecting the Lions' 53-man roster, Detroit Lions on SI's Christian Booher predicted quarterback Kyle Allen and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin wouldn't make the roster.
Allen was brought in because of major uncertainty at the team's backup QB spot. Hendon Hooker held that spot throughout the 2024 regular season, but the Lions ended up bringing Teddy Bridgewater out of retirement to take over the role during the playoffs.
Allen wasn't a perfect answer to their need for a better backup, but he at least brought starting experience.
If he loses the QB battle to Hooker, the Lions can let him go without any dead cap.
Ya-Sin was added as depth in the cornerback room, but it wouldn't be much of a surprise for the Lions to move on from him.
The cornerback room is extremely crowded, with Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed locked into the starting jobs and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Amik Robertson, and Avonte Maddox competing with Ya-Sin for playing time.
That cornerback competition has led to Robertson becoming a popular name in trade speculation this offseason.
Letting go of Ya-Sin, whose contract doesn't come with any dead money in it, makes more sense.
