The Detroit Lions have made their feelings very clear about their quarterback, and they did it in the loudest, simplest way possible. The team’s Instagram account posted a highlight graphic earlier this week with one message repeated three times: JA-RED GOFF.
It was not subtle, nor was it meant to be. Detroit wanted everyone to understand exactly how well their quarterback is playing heading into a massive "Sunday Night Football" matchup at Philadelphia.
At 6-3 and tied with Chicago for first place in the NFC North, the Lions have leaned on Goff in a way that almost feels like he did from his earlier career peaks. Only this time, he looks more confident and more comfortable than ever.
The graphic posted by the team backed it up with numbers that jump off the page.
Goff ranks first in the league in completion percentage at 74 percent and sits second in passing touchdowns with 20. He is also second in passer rating at 117.7, second in passing first down rate at 41.4 percent, fourth in touchdown percentage and fifth in yards per attempt. For a quarterback who once faced heavy criticism over the years, he seems to have flipped the conversation completely.
Detroit wanted fans to see those stats for a reason. This game against the Eagles is one of the biggest tests of the Lions' season, and Goff is walking into it playing some of the best football of his career. The team’s confidence in him has kept their offense steady even with injuries and lineup shifts.
One of the reasons the Lions have stayed competitive is how balanced their offense has become. Amon-Ra St. Brown has taken another step and leads the team in touchdown receptions, with 8. He has been a safety valve, a deep threat, and a tone setter on key downs. Goff’s connection with him has been one of the most reliable parts of the entire offense.
Detroit will be without tight end Sam LaPorta on Sunday night after he was placed on injured reserve with a back issue. His absence is a big loss. He has been one of the league’s most productive young tight ends and a major part of Detroit’s third-down success.
Even so, the Lions believe Goff can keep the offense rolling. His accuracy and efficiency have turned short throws into long gains and kept drives alive in pressure moments.
A road trip to face the Eagles in prime time is the type of game that says a lot about a team. Detroit has shown all year that they belong among the NFC’s best, but this matchup also serves as a measuring stick and a chance to send another message. This one is against the defending Super Bowl Champions.
The Lions have two home games after this, hosting the Giants on Nov. 23 and the rival Packers on Thanksgiving Day. A strong performance in Philadelphia would set the tone for that stretch to end the month
The Lions' social media post might have seemed basic, but it said exactly what the team wanted people to hear. They believe in Jared Goff. They trust him to lead. They trust him to win. And based on the numbers, it is hard to argue.
