The recently winless Detroit Lions have notched victories in two of their last three games and earned an impressive 30-12 upset win over the first-place Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon to improve to 2-11-1 on the season.
Unfortunately, Detroit shared bad news with fans on Monday.
Per Grant Gordon of the NFL's website, the Lions have placed starting quarterback Jared Goff and offensive tackle Matt Nelson on the reserve/COVID-19 list. In corresponding moves, running back Jamaal Williams and cornerback Mark Gilbert were activated off that list.
The NFL and NFL Players Association recently agreed to relaxed testing protocols, but it's unclear if the new guidelines will impact Goff's status ahead of this coming Sunday's contest at the 6-8 Atlanta Falcons. He would have to be considered fully vaccinated and asymptomatic for at least 24 hours to "test out" of the protocols and return to team activities at some point this week.
While Goff's overall numbers for his first campaign with the Lions leave plenty to be desired, he connected on 21-of-26 passes for 216 yards with three touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 139.7 passer rating in the win over Arizona.
Tim Boyle and David Blough temporarily shift up the Detroit depth chart with Goff unavailable.
