The Detroit Lions have decided to part ways with David Montgomery after three seasons, and the running back got emotional while saying goodbye to the fans and community he had treated as home.
The Lions sent the 28-year-old to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2026 fourth-round pick and a 2027 seventh-round pick. The Lions also received offensive lineman Juice Scruggs in the deal.
Montgomery was a fan favorite in Detroit, and he loved being there, too. His time with the Lions ends here, and he couldn't help but get emotional while saying goodbye to the fans he described as special.
"It's hard to find the right words for a goodbye like this. Detroit has never just been a location to me — it's been a community," he began.
"And you all have been more than supporters or a team. You've been steady hands, loud cheers, honest feedback, and quiet strength when I needed it most.
"There is something special about the people here. The resilience. The loyalty."
His quarterback Jared Goff made sure that the love is returned.
"The greatest," the five-time Pro Bowl winner said.
He joined the team in 2023 after four seasons with the Chicago Bears, signing a three-year, $18 million contract. His performance in his first season with the team earned him a two-year contract extension worth $18.25 million.
Montgomery parting ways with the team was reportedly his desire. Lions general manager Brad Holmes addressed the situation by saying he had been in talks with the running back's agent and that "a player has to want to be at a certain place as well."
Montgomery denied the rumor and insisted that his focus is already on next season.
"I want to help this team win. I want to be a Lion. I’m focused on Detroit and ready for this year," he said.
