Veteran cornerback Tre Flowers has already played in one Super Bowl, and the Detroit Lions can only hope he’ll get to do it again next February.

The Lions announced on Wednesday that they signed the 30-year-old Flowers to their practice squad. Flowers, a 2018 fifth-round pick with 44 career starts, spent the preseason with the Chicago Bears but failed to survive final cuts.

Chicago re-signed Flowers but cut him again on Sept. 9, and he’d remained unsigned prior to Wednesday.

A 2016 second-team All-Big 12 selection at Oklahoma State, Flowers moved from safety to corner upon entering the NFL. He played his first three-plus seasons with the Seahawks before Cincinnati claimed him off waivers in October 2021. Although Flowers’ days as a regular defensive contributor were behind him, he found a role on special teams and remained in Cincinnati through the end of 2022.

Flowers spent 2023 with the Atlanta Falcons and suited up for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts last season. He’s picked off four passes, forced five fumbles, and recovered another five in 95 games.

Wednesday marked a busy afternoon for the Lions, who placed cornerback D.J. Reed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Detroit also re-signed another cornerback, Nick Whiteside, to the practice squad, and promoted safety Loren Strickland and linebacker Ty Summers to the 53-man roster.

FanDuel Sportsbook listed the Lions as -10.5 road favorites (-104, meaning a $100 bet would net a $196.15 payout) over the Bengals as of Thursday morning. Detroit leads the NFC North at 3-1 and would be the NFC’s No. 3 seed if the playoffs began today.
