Monday evening, the Lions signed former Chargers running back Justin Jackson. Detroit already has a well above-average  running back room  consisting of Deandre Swift and Jamaal Williams. Now, the Lions add another running back to the group to expand on the unit’s depth and talent.

As a seventh-round pick, Jackson has been playing to prove himself his entire career. Playing behind Austin Ekeler, Jackson has managed to keep himself on the field as a rotation running back for four straight seasons with the Chargers. In 2021, Jackson averaged  5.2 yards per carry while playing in 14 games.

There is now a real argument the Detroit Lions have one of the best RB rooms in the entire league. In a world where running backs get injured as often as they do, it’s always nice to have a unit with depth. Now into August, it seemed like the Lions were done making free agency moves. However, this late signing is a huge bonus for Detroit. Zero risk, high reward.

If everyone stays healthy through the season, Jackson may only get a handful of offensive snaps per game. However, in a scenario where either Swift or Williams gets injured, Jackson will likely be the next man up.

Jackson is always a nice piece for special teams, as his speed can be used as a kick or punt returner. Even if he isn’t the primary return man, he’ll find a way to be on the field.
