The Detroit Lions entered the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear mission: to solidify their offensive line following the departure of Taylor Decker.

In the days leading up to the event, CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that General Manager Brad Holmes was “sniffing around” a potential trade-up from the 17th overall pick.

Despite having limited resources, only possessing pick No. 50 before a significant gap until the fourth round, Holmes’ history of aggressive and unconventional drafting created speculation that a move for a top-tier tackle could actually happen.

Ultimately, the Lions decided to stay at No. 17, and the decision paid off.

They selected Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller, a choice that immediately reshapes the identity of their offensive line.

Ari Meirov reported on X that the 6’6¾”, 317-pound standout is a former wrestler who offers elite durability, having set Clemson’s record with 3,778 offensive snaps across 54 starts.

The most significant consequence of this selection is the tactical shift it brings to the rest of the line.

Meirov noted that since Miller played almost exclusively at right tackle during his college career, this selection likely means the Lions will move All-Pro Penei Sewell to left tackle.

While Sewell has been a dominant force on the right side, this move ensures that Jared Goff’s blindside is protected by one of the best in the business, while allowing the rookie to play in his natural position.

This outcome differs from the scenario envisioned by Peter Schrager in his final mock draft.

Schrager had projected a bold trade-up with the Rams to select Alabama’s Kadyn Proctor, which would have kept Sewell on the right.

However, by remaining at 17 and selecting Miller, Brad Holmes was able to effectively replace Decker while keeping Detroit’s 2027 draft picks, currently described as “untouchable,” safely in reserve.
