Lions Star Jahmyr Gibbs Breaks Silence on Contract Standoff

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs has broken his silence on social media after sitting out the opening sessions of training camp while contract talks continue with the team.

Gibbs cleared the club’s conditioning test yet has remained on the sidelines for the first two practices. Speculation centers on his desire to resolve a new multiyear agreement before fully rejoining workouts.

In a recent Instagram update, the 24-year-old standout shared a brief message aimed at supporters: “Patiently waiting …..”

Negotiations between the sides are underway, and Gibbs is widely expected to emerge as the league’s highest-paid running back once an extension is finalized. Complicating matters is the parallel situation involving Atlanta Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who is pursuing his own deal at roughly the same time.

Any contracts the two backs secure will inevitably draw direct comparisons, with each side pushing for superior terms and incentives to claim the upper hand in public perception.

Few recent running back contracts offer clear benchmarks for these discussions. Miami’s Devon Achane recently agreed to terms averaging $16 million annually, placing him third among the position’s top earners.

Observers anticipate Gibbs and Robinson will surpass the current standards set by Christian McCaffrey at $19 million per year and Saquon Barkley at $20 million per year.

Those veterans are 30 and 29, respectively, while Gibbs and Robinson are both 24 and approaching their prime production windows, creating expectations for deals that meaningfully exceed existing marks.

Teams may reference Achane’s agreement as a more age-appropriate comparison, yet the youthful pair’s track records make that argument difficult to sustain and could prolong the process.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay had earlier forecast a record-setting extension for Gibbs, underscoring the high stakes involved.

In Gibbs’ absence, the Lions plan to feature free-agent addition Isiah Pacheco, recently signed from the Kansas City Chiefs, and third-year player Sione Vaki. Pacheco can use the extra repetitions to adapt to Detroit’s scheme and offensive line, while Vaki, who primarily played safety in college, gains valuable experience in the backfield.

Once an agreement is reached, Gibbs is expected to reclaim his starting role immediately. The temporary arrangement allows him to avoid unnecessary wear while providing developmental opportunities for the depth options.
