Lions' struggles on SNF are begging Brad Holmes to acquire obvious trade target

Even without coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn, the song remains the same for the Detroit Lions. Dan Campbell has his team looking like a Super Bowl contender once again, but the lack of talent at the cornerback position threatens to sink Detroit's ship once again.

With veteran DJ Reed and former top pick Terrion Arnold working their way back from injuries, the Lions are thin at a position that has already been exploited by other contenders around the league. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs had no issue moving the ball against this secondary early in their Sunday Night Football duel.

Lions GM Brad Holmes is likely already working the phones and figuring out who should be acquired in a trade deadline move that shakes up the system, but he should have even more motivation to bring in one particular player to town as Week 6 made clear just how big this hole is.

Detroit would be wise to get the Seattle Seahawks on the phone and see if there is a deal that can be made to acquire cornerback Riq Woolen. Despite some up-and-down results in the last few years, Woolen would be a huge upgrade in what has become a much-maligned secondary for Detroit.

Lions must trade for Riq Woolen after SNF struggles vs. Patrick Mahomes

Woolen is currently a major contributor on a Seahawks team that is proving to be one of the very best in the NFL at this point, but he appears to have fallen down the pecking order after Devon Witherspoon's improvements and the reinvigoration of Josh Jobe under Mike Macdonald.

The 6-4 cornerback came into the league as one of the premier takeaway artists, and his physical stature could make him a unique physical challenge for a Lions defense that likes to get up close and personal at the line of scrimmage. Woolen might not cost an arm and a leg either.

Even if the Lions get Reed and Arnold back on the field soon, and they play at about the same level they were at prior to their injuries, that still wouldn't be good enough for them to compete with the best of the best on a consistent basis. One more name is needed to complete this unit.

Woolen getting back to the form he showcased early in his career would not only be a massive developmental win for Dan Campbell, but it would provide a huge Band-Aid to one of this team's biggest problems.
