The Detroit Lions are negotiating with tight end T.J. Hockenson on a contract extension.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes told the Detroit Free Press that if they cannot agree on a contract extension before the May 2 deadline, the team will exercise the fifth-year option on Hockenson's rookie contract.
"He's a big part of what we did last year," Holmes said. "It was unfortunate when he became unavailable for us. He's another one that we'll be continuing to lean on this year."
Hockenson finished with 61 receptions for 583 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 9.6 yards per reception in 12 games for the Lions last season. Hockenson had his season cut short five games early after surgery on his thumb.
Hockenson is still on his rookie contract, signing a four-year contract (fifth-year option) worth $19.8 million in 2019. He's scheduled to make a $965,000 base salary with a $6.5 million cap hit in 2022. If his fifth-year option is exercised, Hockenson's base salary, and cap hit, will shoot up to $9.3 million in 2023.
Originally the eighth overall selection in the first round by Detroit in the 2019 draft, Hockenson has played three seasons for the Lions. In 40 career games, Hockenson has compiled 160 catches for 1,673 yards and 12 touchdowns, making the Pro Bowl in 2020.
