Lions to place Jerry Jacobs on injured reserve, opening roster spot

On Thursday afternoon Detroit Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs put out a cryptic tweet thanking the city of Detroit. This naturally had some Lions fans concerned because just last week, Bruce Irvin and Isaiah Buggs put out tweets saying the same thing and they had just been released. Well, there's some good news and bad news here.

The good news is that Jacobs is not leaving the team. The bad news is that per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Jacobs will be place on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury on Wednesday. You hate to see this happen to a guy that's been a big part of the Lions defense all season. Jacobs started 12 games for the Lions in 2023 and racked up three interceptions. 

While he did begin to struggle and the team took him out of the lineup in favor of Kindle Vildor and Khalil Dorsey, Jacobs is still part of the team and has continued to play down the stretch. Now his season is done. 

Now the Lions have some decisions to make. They now have an open roster spot right before Sunday's game. Do they activate James Houston now and then play him when he's ready to go? This way they wouldn't have to part with anyone else down the road in the even that the Lions win on Sunday and he'll be ready to go in the next game. 

The opposite decision would be to elevate someone else like Tyson Alualu. The Lions could make Steven Gilmore active for this game if they're looking for help on special teams. That way they can elevate elsewhere. We'll soon see what they decide to do. We'll keep you updated on any move they may make.
