The AFC North has a new addition, with the Baltimore Ravens signing former Packer cornerback Jaire Alexander to a one-year, $4 million dollar deal. The news was broken by the Ravens, posting pictures of Alexander after he signed his new deal with them.
Alexander, who was recently waived by the Packers after spending his entire career with them, lands in a hard-nosed division alongside some of the best defenders in the league. Baltimore is a team with Super Bowl aspirations, so Alexander has certaintly landed in an ideal situation after being unceremoniously kicked to the curb by Green Bay.
Now, Alexander will be tasked with defending talent like Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins with the Cincinnati Bengals, Jerry Jeudy with the Cleveland Browns, and D.K. Metcalf with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And, more notably for Detroit Lions fans, he'll be facing off with his old NFC North foe pretty early in the year - in Week 3, when the Lions travel to Baltimore in a potential Super Bowl preview.
What's unfortunate for Ravens fans is that the Lions have repeatedly made Alexander look foolish in games throughout his career with the Packers. He's not exactly a Detroit-stopper. They'll soon find this out when the two teams clash.
Alexander's stats against the Lions all-time are not exactly inspiring, although Green Bay has gone 5-2 against Detroit since Alexander was drafted by them in 2018. Over the seven games that he's played against the Lions, he's only wracked up one interception.
Baltimore's secondary now features Alexander, Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, and Marlon Humphrey. That's a genuinely formidable unit without Alexander, and if he stays healthy, it's even scarier. However, Alexander has had so many injuries bogging down his ability to be available for Green Bay in the past few years that it's hard to imagine he will be impactful for Baltimore for many games.
Alexander was signed to a relatively smaller deal due to these injury concerns, presumably. However, there are incentives in the deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, which could make the value go up to $6 million. You'd have to imagine that one of those incentives has to do with games played in 2025.
A fun battle between a former NFC North mainstay and the Lions' wide receiving corp could be a lot of fun, so hopefully Alexander is able to stay healthy and play in Week 3 so we get that experience.
