Lions writer names best position battle to watch for (it's not the one you think)

The Detroit Lions, for perhaps the second time in recent franchise history, have a consistent starting quarterback under center. There's nothing to really worry about in regards to Jared Goff's production for the 2025, as he's proven to be a reliable regular season quarterback for the Lions (beyond that is something that's yet to be seen).

Of course, you always need reliable backup quarterback play, as well. You never know what could happen in a game. That's what makes the Lions' quarterback room so important to have squared away, and it's why Lions team reporter Tim Twentyman listed the battle between Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen for the role of QB2 as the most exciting to watch for this training camp.

"Outside of the starting rotation along the interior of the offensive line, the next biggest position battle will be between Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen to be Goff's backup. Quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell said the competition is wide open heading into camp," writes Twentyman of the impending battle between Hooker and Allen.

Hooker, Allen battle one to watch

Forget the battle for starting center - Twentyman thinks this competition between two signal callers fighting to remain on a roster will be the one to look for if you're a Lions fan clamoring for any football rivalry content ahead of the 2025 season.

Hooker is heading into his third season and second full season, looking to earn the coaches' trust and prove he can be that guy not only in the regular season but in the playoffs too. Hooker was Goff's backup during the regular season last year, but the team opted to sign veteran Teddy Bridgewater to have more experience behind Goff for their playoff run. Allen has started 19 games over a seven-year career with a 62.7 career completion percentage with more touchdowns (26) than interceptions (21). Will the Lions opt for more experience behind Goff? Both Hooker and Allen will have the benefit of four preseason games and not the usual three to show what they can do and earn the job.Tim Twentyman on QB2 battle

Goff is as tough as they come, so it's hard to imagine a world where he doesn't play most if not all of the Lions' games this season barring a significant injury. But, smart teams always have good insurance for their most important players. They did just that by adding Bridgewater to the roster last season, and they clearly plan to do so by really feeling out both Allen and Hooker in preseason.

It still feels like starting center is the battle to really key in on if you're a Lions fan, but no one will fault you if you're so desperate for Lions football that you actually become invested in the battle between two backups.
