Longtime New York Jets Veteran, 5X All-Pro Retires
Dec 3, 2023; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; Atlanta Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier (25) is tackled by New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (95) and linebacker C.J. Mosley (57).

A longtime member of the New York Jets defense is officially not returning to the NFL for the upcoming season. The news comes a month before first-year head coach Aaron Glenn is set to run his first training camp with the organization.

The Jets hinted changes were coming at middle linebacker when they selected middle linebacker Francisco Mauigoa in the fifth round of the draft.

Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley is retiring

Per Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, linebacker C.J. Mosley announced his intention to retire.

“Five-time All-Pro linebacker CJ Mosley is retiring, he tells @CBSSports,” Zenitz posted on X Thursday morning. “The former Ravens and Jets captain posted over 1,000 tackles in 11 NFL seasons. At The University of Alabama, Mosley won the Butkus Award, SEC Defensive Player of the Year and back-to-back national titles.”

The Baltimore Ravens selected Mosley with the No. 17 pick in the 2014 draft. He earned five All-Pro nominations and made the Pro Bowl five times. He appeared in 133 games and started in 132.

During his time in the league, Mosley recorded 1,033 tackles, 53 passes defensed, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, and ten forced fumbles. Mosley, 33, opted to sit out in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mosley played in just four games for New York in 2024 as he battled neck and toe injuries. The Jets released him in March.
