Longtime NFL writer addresses Chargers, Bill Belichick rumors

Well-respected longtime NFL writer Gary Myers became the latest person to link New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick with the Los Angeles Chargers shortly after the Chargers parted ways with head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco on Friday.

"As I mentioned last month — and now the job is open — the Chargers are the most logical spot for Bill Belichick in 2024," Myers posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Friday afternoon.

Back on Nov. 15, Myers revealed that "one of my well-placed sources believes the Chargers are the favorites for Bill Belichick in 2024."

Myers suggested on Friday that Chargers owner Dean Spanos seemingly hopes that Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach, can teach star quarterback Justin Herbert and others within the locker room "how to win." Under Staley, Herbert and the Chargers endured an epic playoff collapse at the Jacksonville Jaguars this past January.

Multiple in-the-know individuals made it known this week they think that Belichick, who was mentioned as a candidate for the Chargers job long before Friday's developments, won't accept a trade to a different team proposed by Patriots owner Robert Kraft this winter and instead will force Kraft to fire the 71-year-old. Myers wrote on Friday that "Kraft is not going to fire Belichick" regardless of what anybody thinks.

"They will come to a mutual agreement to let him go, contingent on getting draft choice compensation," Myers added about the coach who reportedly is under contract through the 2024 season.

It's unclear what Kraft could ask for in return for Belichick's services.

For what it's worth, Mike Cole of NESN noted on Friday that Myers "knows Belichick quite well." That doesn't necessarily mean Belichick to the Chargers is close to being a done deal even though it was reported earlier this week that Kraft decided over a month ago he wants to take his franchise in a different direction after Week 18.
