Los Angeles Chargers Draft: NFL Insider Taps into Fans’ Biggest Fear, Bets Paycheck Jim Harbaugh Won’t Pick WR At #5
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

NFL Analyst Bucky Brooks joined the Bleav In Chargers podcast and was asked what direction the Los Angeles Chargers will go in the first round of the draft. Brook’s response was clear. He does not believe Jim Harbaugh will take a wide receiver with the 5th overall pick in the draft and Brooks will (almost) put his money where his mouth is.

“I would almost put my entire paycheck that that first pick, will not be in pass catcher. It’s gonna be someone that is at the line of scrimmage.”

After the Chargers opted to cut and trade their top two receivers and best offensive weapons, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that they would draft a wide receiver. Especially given the high expectations about the top three pass catchers in the draft class. Depending on how the draft board plays out in the top four, the Chargers could have their pick of any of the top three. Even before Keenan Allen’s trade and the waiving Mike Williams, most mock drafters stuck the Chargers with a pass catcher, most commonly with Malik Nabers or Brock Bowers

So why the about-face away from a glaring and obvious roster need? Brooks describes it like this,

“It is hard for me to believe after he gave a dissertation on how the offensive line makes everybody in the building better they’re not going to be a line of scrimmage team and I go back to when he was at Stanford. They couldn’t put enough offensive linemen on the field. 8 or 9 offensive linemen line up in the I-formation, and and they’re saying we’re gonna run the power to the right and they run it.”

How Far Will The Los Angeles Chargers Go To Establish The Jim Harbaugh Brand?

Brooks thinks that Harbaugh wouldn’t just stop at the first round.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they double up the first two rounds and take multiple offensive linemen because he is going to establish himself as the brand.”
