Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert lands very high in 2024 PFF NFL QB rankings
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Many media outlets and analysts have released their NFL quarterback rankings for 2024 heading into the summer. Los Angeles Chargers signal-caller Justin Herbert seems to be one of the more polarizing players, but Pro Football Focus does have a very favorable view of him.

Early in May, Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports put Herbert ninth in his NFL QB rankings behind the likes of Jalen Hurts, Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott. Meanwhile, Colin Cowherd of FOX Sports earlier this offseason and Nick Shook of NFL.com ranked Herbert 17th in his end-of-season list. Shook also didn’t list Herbert among the 10 NFL quarterbacks who could win MVP in 2024.

  • Justin Herbert stats (2023): 93.2 QB rating, 65.1% completion rate, 20-7 TD-INT, 6.9 yards per attempt, 4.4% touchdown rate in 13 games

While the standard stats from Herbert and the Chargers’ offense last season don’t necessarily suggest he’s an MVP-caliber quarterback, those who specialized in advanced statistics and film study see it very differently heading into 2024.

NFL analysts rave about Justin Herbert

In the first set of PFF NFL quarterback rankings for 2024, analyst Trevor Sikkema rated Herbert as the fifth-best quarterback in football and the top signal-caller in “Tier 3: Postseason-caliber QBs” right ahead of Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers, Prescott, Hurts and C.J. Stroud.

“2023 wasn’t Herbert’s best season from an efficiency standpoint — plus he missed the final four games due to injury — but he did what many of us have been asking for the last few years: push the ball more. He posted a 5.0% big-time throw rate, his highest since his rookie year, and recorded an average target depth of more than 8.0 yards downfield for the first time in his career.”

Sikkema isn’t even the highest NFL analyst on Herbert. film analyst Derrik Klassen (@QBKlass) of The 33rd Team ranked Herbert as the fourth-best quarterback at the start of the 2024 offseason.

“Despite all of what was wrong with the Los Angeles Chargers a year ago, Justin Herbert was still on track for another wonderful season before it got derailed by injury. Herbert was sensational for most of the season, save for a couple of blips, like the Dallas game. Herbert remains the prototype when you consider his size, arm talent, pocket presence, decision-making and accuracy.”

While the Chargers’ quarterback doesn’t have the playoff resume or personal accolades of his peers, Herbert has consistently shown the talent and execution to be one of the best NFL quarterbacks. Now that Los Angeles has provided him with a better offensive line and good coaching staff, Herbert could take that next step to become an MVP-caliber player.
