Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman was arrested Friday in LA, per TMZ Sports. According to the report, Perryman was picked up and booked on a felony charge of possessing an assault weapon.
TMZ reported Perryman was en route to a gun range when cops serached his car and found he had two AR rifles and three handguns in his trunk, with the rifles being non-compliant. That is illegal in California.
Perryman is due in court Tuesday, per the report. This is his first felony charge.
Perryman’s agent Ron Butler released a statement regarding his client. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided the details.
“We are aware of the recent reports regarding Denzel Perryman’s arrest in Los Angeles,” the statement read. “At this time, we are still gathering facts and will fully cooperate with the process. Denzel is a respected veteran in the NFL and a dedicated father, teammate, and professional. While we do not take this situation lightly, we remain confident that the matter will be resolved fairly and in accordance with the law. Out of respect for the process and all parties involved, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Perryman was a second round pick by the Chargers in 2015 out of Miami. He spent six seasons with the team before stints with the Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders and Houston Texans from 2021-23. He returned to the Chargers last season.
A Pro Bowler in 2021 with the Raiders, Perryman was a third-team All-American in college as well. During his final season with the Hurricanes, Perryman stood out and turned himself into a top 50 NFL prospect.
Over the course of his NFL career, Perryman has 717 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 14 pass deflections and five interceptions. He registered 55 tackles in 11 games in 2024.
At Miami, Perryman racked up a good stat line over the course of four seasons. He had 351 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, one interception and six forced fumbles.
As a member of the Class of 2011, Perryman was a four-star recruit out of Miami (Fla.) Coral Gables Senior, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He was the No. 65 overall prospect in the state, the No. 37 linebacker in the class and the No. 385 overall prospect in the class.
