Los Angeles Chargers Make Stunning Charlie Kolar Decision

As the Los Angeles Chargers released the first depth chart ahead of their Week 1 game, it came with a bit of a surprise.

When looking at the tight end spot, the Chargers went on to have Charlie Kolar listed as their starting tight end rather than going with David Njoku or Oronde Gadsden II.

JUST IN: Charlie Kolar is currently listed as the TE1 on the Chargers depth chart.

David Njoku is TE2.

Charlie Kolar is the key to Mike McDaniel’s Offense

While Gadsden and Njoku are the more notable tight ends and bring more flashy plays, it was clear that Kolar was valued highly with the three-year, $24.3 million deal he signed.

Kolar isn’t likely to be a high-volume receiver, but he brings value as a blocker. For Mike McDaniel’s offense, which depends on creating hesitation through motion, outside-zone concepts, and personnel groupings, Kolar gives Los Angeles the best chance for this system to be executed correctly.

Njoku and Gadsden will still have a role, but it is clear that Kolar’s blocking ability gave him the edge.
