Los Angeles Chargers RB Austin Ekeler Reveals Injury Status Vs. Las Vegas Raiders
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Los Angeles Chargers running back Austin Ekeler hasn’t been able to play since he injured his ankle in their Week 1 loss to the Miami Dolphins. The veteran returned to practice on Wednesday and at this point, Ekeler is remaining positive that he will be back in action soon.

Austin Ekeler Returns to Los Angeles Chargers Practice

Speaking to reporters after practice, where he took part in individual drills. According to the 28-year-old, he’s steadily progressing on his road to recovery:

I can run full speed straight ahead right now,” Ekeler said, standing on the balls of his feet to show he had no pain with that motion, via Kris Rhim of ESPN. “But if I go turn — that’s where I have been trying to build back towards.”

The Chargers have the Las Vegas Raiders coming up on Sunday as LA looks to improve on their 1-2 record. The Raiders are also looking to bounce back after two straight defeats, so you just know that there’s going to be a lot at stake for both teams.

For their part, LA could get all the help they can get against Las Vegas, which means that if Ekeler is healthy enough, they will need him to suit up. According to the former Western State standout, playing on Sunday is a “possibility” for him.

“I’m not at a point where I’ve gone out there and tried to push it 100% yet,” Ekeler said. “That’s not how the process works. You continue to build yourself back. It’s kind of like climbing the stairs. You’re not gonna just jump straight to the top stair and tell me, ‘Oh yeah, I can make it there.’ You kind of go one-by-one, ‘OK, now we’re progressing towards 100%.’ So I haven’t been there yet.”

Austin Ekeler Reveals Harsh Reality of Injuries

Ekeler took part in this offseason’s running back pay dispute, which also saw the Chargers veteran protest his supposed lack of compensation from his team. He eventually ended up signing a revised deal that will see him pocket $1.75 million this term.

His injury, however, stood in the way of his ability to back up all the brouhaha from the offseason:

“It sucks because … we want to go out there and continue to prove our point that ‘Hey, we can continue to make a huge impact on this league.

“… So yeah, it’s frustrating. It’s frustrating for anyone getting injured.”

The good news for Ekeler and the Rams is that the veteran should be back on the field sooner rather than later. He should get a chance to prove his worth in the coming weeks.
