Los Angeles Chargers Suddenly Sign Veteran Quarterback To Finish 2023 Season
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers have had a season to forget in 2023. From season-ending injuries to star receiver Mike Williams and quarterback Justin Herbert to head coach Brandon Staley and general manager Tom Telesco being fired, this year has not gone how the Chargers expected it to. Now, it is reported that the team has signed a veteran quarterback to start over struggling backup Easton Stick.

Los Angeles Chargers sign Veteran Quarterback

Los Angeles is signing New England Patriots quarterback Will Grier off their practice squad. While Grier will most likely serve as Stick’s backup, there is a chance that he could get some playing time with the Chargers this season. The veteran quarterback has only started one game in his career back in 2019 with the Carolina Panthers, and went 28-52 on pass attempts for 228 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Grier was a star in college when he played for Florida University and West Virginia. In his collegiate career. he went for 8,556 passing yards, 81 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. He was drafted in the third round and 100 overall in the 2019 NFL draft by the Panthers, then went to the Dallas Cowboys (2021-2022), Cincinnati Bengals (2023), the Patriots, and now the Chargers.

Will Grier Redemption Arc?

While Los Angeles’ playoff hopes are pretty much gone, Grier has the opportunity to prove himself as either the undisputed backup behind Herbert or can shock the world and become a starter for another team next season. Stick has not performed well at all following the Chargers’ 63-21 blowout loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, which could lead to him being benched for Grier as the regular season winds down.

Los Angeles is 5-9 and in last place in the AFC West division. They are pretty much eliminated from playoff contention this season barring a miracle, and will look to make more noise in 2024. The team will finish the season off against the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, and Denver Broncos. Will we see Grier show some potential, or will he just ride the bench once again?
