Los Angeles Rams grabbed some playmaking undrafted free agents ahead of NFL Rookie Minicamp
Morgan Tencza-USA TODAY Sports

NFL rookie minicamps are already here! The Los Angeles Rams are hosting off their rookie minicamp this week, May 10-11. All of their draft picks will obviously get the majority of the attention this weekend, but general manager Les Snead signed several intriguing undrafted free agents that could surprise this season too.

It's always difficult for undrafted free agents to make an instant impact on NFL teams, let alone make the team at all, but there are always a few that stand out enough to overcome the odds. Let's dive into some of the top undrafted free agent signings who might just begin their epic NFL story this week at Rams rookie minicamp!

Kenny Logan Jr., S Kansas

There aren't many defensive backs in the entire 2024 NFL Draft class with more experience than Kenny Logan Jr. from Kansas. He logged four straight seasons of starts for the Jayhawks, tallying nearly 3000 snaps on defense as well as consistent special teams work early on in his collegiate career.

Logan brings great range, speed, and posted three straight years with more than 90 total tackles playing safety. He's truly been one of the better free safeties in all of college football for a long while now. Just check out a handful of his top plays in Ben Fennell's post below.

The Rams already drafted Kamren Kinchens in round three and have Kamren Curl as well, but those are really the only two projected starting level safeties on the team right now. Kenny Logan Jr. has the talent to potentially grow into the Rams' third safety position in year one despite surprisingly going undrafted.

Omar Speights, LB LSU

One of the most unbelievable undrafted free agents in the 2024 NFL Draft class, Omar Speights should immediately slide into the competition for the Rams' second starting linebacker spot. Ernest Jones if phenomenal, but Christian Rozeboom and the slew of other off-ball linebackers for the Rams are flat out bad.

Thanks to the extra year of eligibility due to COVID, Speights actually started at linebacker for nearly five full seasons in college. His first four came with Oregon State where he racked up over 300 tackles and almost 60 pass rush pressures. His final season was played at LSU. And while much of the LSU Tigers' defense struggled last season, Speights did not. He only allowed one touchdown in coverage and tallied almost 30 run stops for neutral or negative plays. Speights should certainly make the 53-man roster given his experience and versatility.

Drake Stoops, WR Oklahoma

The Rams have taken some incredibly overlooked and undervalued wide receivers and turned them into absolute stars and key contributors in recent years. Cooper Kupp. Puka Nacua. And even players that don't fit standard NFL receiver roles like Tutu Atwell and Ben Skowronek have found their way to relevance at the next level. And if there's going to be another wide receiver that surprisingly emerges for the Rams from the 2024 NFL Draft class it's going to be Drake Stoops, WR Oklahoma.

Stoops is of course the son of Oklahoma's winningest football coach ever, Bob Stoops. He played six years for the Sooners, but truly broke out this past season, catching 84 receptions for 962 yards and 10 touchdowns! Stoops has been turning heads this spring ever since he showcased his impressive route running ability at the East-West Shrine Bowl as you can see in the post below.

Cooper Kupp has struggled with injury for much of his career and will surprisingly already turn 31 years old this summer. If the team is looking for another shifty slot wide receiver option who knows how to find the open space in a defense, Stoops could earn a shot in that role.

Jaylen McCollough, S Tennessee

The Rams look like they have a type in this class. The aforementioned Kenny Logan Jr. has over 3000 total snaps between defense and special teams. Speights has five years starting. Stoops is coming off year six. And Jaylen McCollough has over 3600 on defense alone. It's clear the Rams were targeting experienced difference makers across the board who could seriously press for roster spots and perhaps even starting snaps.

McCollough doesn't just bring raw experience either. He brings playmaking ability, having snagged six interceptions over the last three years with over a dozen passes defended on top of that throughout his career with the Tennessee Volunteers. McCollough is an aggressive, versatile safety who can play deep, drop into the slot, or push up into the box to stop the run too. He struggled with missed tackles a few years back in 2021, but since then he's really cleaned up that aspect of his game.

There's a good chance both McCollough, Logan Jr., Stoops, and Speights all make the final 53-man roster as undrafted free agents.
