Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is one of the most cerebral coaches in the history of the game. Not only is he an offensive genius and has a unique way of connecting with his players, but he also has insane intelligence and memory when it comes to remembering past plays and games.
McVay was just a guest on the Men In Blazers Network, a network dedicated to all things soccer, err, English Football.
In a very fun interview (McVay interviews are always a must listen), the host asks a question that actually came from JJ Watt about how he would fare if he dedicated his craft to coaching soccer.
“Do you think that if someone gave you five years to learn and study, that you could coach, not a Premier League team, but like a third-tier League One or a second-tier Championship side to a winning record?” Asks the host.
McVay responds, “No, I don’t think so. Now, I do think there is a lot of crossover in regards to how you lead, how you connect, how you build a sustainable culture… I would never pretend to accumulate that kind of knowledge, but I would sure work my ass off to do it if I had the chance.”

Now this is a very respectful and politically correct answer from McVay. Those of us who have covered him long enough understand that he is such a respectful and honorable person that he will never toot his own horn.
He respects the craft too much and how much work that goes into it.
However, those of us who have covered the Los Angeles Rams and Sean McVay long enough also know that, in reality, McVay could probably coach any sport that he wants and would be successful. He is that smart, that dedicated, and that good.

When you think about the iconic show Ted Lasso, the American College Football coach who goes to London and coaches a professional soccer team for the first time, the coach that we have all kind of compared to that role is Los Angeles Chargers‘ head coach Jim Harbaugh.
This certainly fits, but the more you think about it, Sean McVay may actually be an even better fit. Especially when you think about his 2022 season and the demons that he dealt with in a season that wore heavy on him and almost forced him into retirement.
With five years to study the game, I have zero doubts that McVay would end up being one of the premier soccer coaches on the international stage, pun intended.
Will we ever see that happen? The Los Angeles Rams certainly hope not.
