The Los Angeles Rams are fresh off of an international drubbing of the Jacksonville Jaguars and are entering their bye week on a high note. Their new-look offense , helmed by head coach Sean McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford, carved up the Jaguars' defense with ease for most of the game, and Stafford set a record for the most touchdown passes in an international game.
Part of their successful day offensively was due to a breakout performance from one of their rookie skill position players: WR Konata Mumpfield. It wasn't the most productive performance on the day with just one catch for five yards, but Mumpfield reeled in his first touchdown of his career, and it got the ball rolling for the Rams' offense.
Mumpfield set a career high in snaps against the Jaguars, recording 28 snaps and was the clear WR3 behind Davante Adams and Jordan Whittington. Even with Puka Nacua set to return shortly after the Rams' bye this week, Mumpfield figures to be a steady part of the offense moving forward this season. After the game, Davante Adams heaped plenty of praise about Mumpfield.
Following Mumpfield's first big game of the season, elite playmaker Davante Adams and potential future Hall of Famer was positively glowing when talking about Mumpfield's ability on the football field.
"I call Konata my son because he just reminds me so much of myself as far as a young 'Tae. And honestly I think he's ahead of where I was my rookie year as far as being comfortable in the league. He's crazy coachable and he's got all the ability in the world. So as far as whenever I'm done in there, he'll go and step up and he'll be catching a lot more touchdowns than he did today."
Adams is one of the best wide receivers of our generation, sitting 29th all-time in career receiving yards and ninth all time in touchdowns. For Mumpfield to draw that level of praise from Adams is almost unbelievable to see. However, it's not entirely undeserved. Coming out of the 2025 NFL Draft, I felt like Mumpfield might have been the Rams' biggest steal due to his route-running prowess and ability to just naturally get open. Those kinds of receivers become quarterbacks' best friends over their career, and Mumpfield slipped through the cracks due to his rather middling athletic testing numbers.
However, it's clear that the Rams saw something in his college film, and that has translated so far to his play in the NFL. As time goes on, I'm intrigued to see the type of role he builds behind Nacua and Adams and if he can be the WR3 the Rams' offense needs to take that next step.
